Four people were saved and one man died after drowning at an unprotected beach in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, on Monday, officials said.

Beaches in Seaside Heights typically open at 9 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. when lifeguards leave for the day, Vaz said.

Thursday’s incident in South Seaside Park was reported about 6:40 p.m., when a teen and adult male in the ocean appeared to be in trouble.

Seaside Heights beaches will close by 5 p.m. on days of rough surf and rip currents, two hours earlier than the previous 7 p.m. closure.
