The S&P 500 was edging higher Monday afternoon, closing in on a return to its previous record close last week. The broad-based index was up 9 points, or 0.2%, near 6,269, according to FactSet data ...

The S&P 500 plunged 0.3% to 6,259.75after reaching a new record Thursday of 6,280.46. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 279 points, or 0.6%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.2%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost a fraction in Wednesday's stock market trading, even with Dow giant Nike running higher. The S&P 500 index rose 0.5%.

Currently, the Nasdaq is down 18.15 points or 0.1 percent at 20,593.19, but the S&P 500 is up 13.82 points or 0.2 percent at 6,277.08 and the Dow is up 257.39 points or 0.6 percent at 44,715.69.

But the blue-chip Dow and broader S&P 500 both retreated. The US consumer price index for June showed inflation rose 2.7 percent compared with a year earlier.
