After reports of widespread flaws in hardware-based SSD encryption, Microsoft has pushed out an update that defaults BitLocker protection to software-based AES encryption.

BitLocker is officially only available for Windows 10/11 Pro. However, the tool is actually also included in the Home versions, just hidden.

To use the BitLocker Drive Encryption management tools, you must be running a business edition of Windows 10 or Windows 11: Pro, Enterprise, or Education.

Microsoft is making a big security change to Windows 11. BitLocker device encryption will soon be automatically enabled in the 24H2 version of Windows 11.

BitLocker also integrates with TPM (Trusted Platform Module), a hardware component built into modern computers for preserving encryption keys and safeguarding against hard drive tampering.

The BitLocker encryption on this drive isn’t compatible with your version of Windows. Try opening the drive using a newer version of Windows.

The problem is bad, but Microsoft made it worse. Bitlocker, which lets you encrypt your files on Windows 10, defaults to the disk's built-in encryption, rather than its own system.

Microsoft has not been able to resolve a new issue related to BitLocker encryption reporting on Intune on Windows 11 and Windows 10 enterprise PCs. Thankfully, the company has issued a workaround.
