Transfinite recursion is an essential component of set theory. In this paper, we seek intrinsically justified reasons for believing in recursion and the notions of higher computation that surround it.

Recursion has more expressive power than iterative looping constructs. I say this because a while loop is equivalent to a tail recursive function and recursive functions need not be tail recursive.
